What a cookie actually is
A cookie is a small text file that a website leaves in your browser so it can recognise you on the next page. It is not a program and it cannot read other files on your computer. We also use your browser's local storage for a couple of preference settings, which behaves in a similar way.
Nothing on this site tracks you across other websites for advertising purposes. We do not run a retargeting pixel and we do not sell audience data.
Strictly necessary cookies
These are the ones that make a booking work. Without them the site cannot remember which dates you selected between pages.
- A session cookie that keeps your booking selection together while you move between pages
- A security cookie that protects the enquiry form from automated submissions
- A storage entry that records whether you accepted or declined cookies, so the banner does not reappear on every visit
These cannot be switched off through the site, because the booking form would stop working. You can still block them in your browser, and the site will simply behave as if you had just arrived on every page.
Preference and analytics cookies
These are optional and only set if you accept the banner.
- A preference entry that remembers the room type or package you were last looking at
- An analytics cookie that counts visits and shows which pages are being read, with IP addresses shortened before anything is stored
- A referral cookie that tells us which partner or search result sent you here
Analytics data is aggregated. We see that forty people read the Harbour Suite page last week, not that you in particular did.
Third party embeds
Some pages include a Google Maps frame so you can see where Kippax Street is. Google sets its own cookies when that frame loads, and those are outside our control. The same applies if you follow a link from our site to WhatsApp or Viber, where the destination site's own policy takes over.
We keep the map behind a standard embed rather than loading it automatically in the background, so it only runs when you scroll to it.
Turning cookies off
Every browser lets you see and delete cookies, and most let you block them by default. The setting sits under Privacy or Site Data in the preferences menu. Clearing cookies will also clear your saved cookie choice, so the banner appears again on your next visit.
Declining cookies does not stop you booking a room. It means the site will not remember your last selection or count your visit, and you will see the banner each time you arrive.
Questions
If you want to know exactly which cookies were set during your visit, email snemaro@hotmail.com with the date and time and we will pull the list. The privacy policy explains the wider picture of what we hold and how long we keep it.
